The focal point of the campus plan for the Lakshmibhai National College of Physical Education is the 'Master Playground'. Discussion with administrators and teachers resulted in the recommendation that the main buildings should be more or less around this master stadium. The Administrative and Classroom building (main Block) is located on the Eastern Side, closest to the access road and the gymnasium is located on axis on the opposite side of the stadium. The hostels, following the contours of the land result in an informal arrangement of hostel blocks with interesting open spaces between them. The gymnasium was planned as a formal counterpart to the informal arrangement of the main block, hostels and dining hall. The staff quarters are designed considering the isolated homestead pattern of development typical of Kerala. All houses are single storied, but to avoid infrastructural cost and pockets of uninteresting residual spaces some typologies have also been designed as twin houses, placed in clusters that enhance the quality of open spaces.

The main block was conceived to fit into the landscape, especially the skyline of Kerala. The fact that the building needed to be disaggregated to break up the North-South axis into smaller units having an East-West orientation worked in favor of the architects. This also helped eliminate a monotonous and massive structure with the building acting more as a gateway into the master stadium. The materiality of exposed brick and plaster At the time of the design, the tiered skyline of the building provoked comparisons to a victory stand from the faculty and administrators. Currently, the entry through the building into the stadium appears to be blocked. The campus plan and the design of the administrative building was led by Prof. Oommen Thomas with Architects Koshy K. Alex and Zeril S. Jose.
